Each semester, the Canvas template modules and pages are updated with the latest resources and information. To ensure students see the most up-to-date version, make sure you are updating your Canvas Home page each semester and removing old template pages, modules, and files from your course.
Follow along with this tutorial to see what steps you might need to take to update your Homepage.
The Simple Steps
- Check your Home Page.
- Locate the new Home Page.
- Set the new Home Page as the Front Page.
- Ensure the Front Page is set as the Home Page.
- Edit your new Home page.
- Remove the old page and modules.
Step 1: Check your Home Page
When you open your Canvas course, the very first page that appears is your designated Home Page.
If any other page or content displays, you will need to locate the correct page and designate it as your Home Page.
Step 2: Locate the new Home Page
- In the course navigation menu, click Pages.
- In the top right corner of the Pages area, click on “View All Pages.”
- Locate the new template homepage in the list of pages. It should be titled “Home Page” and will be easy to find if you sort the pages by creation date.
Step 3: Set the new Home Page as the Front Page
- In the pages list, click the three-dot menu next to the new Homepage.
- Select “Use as Front Page”.
Step 4: Ensure the Front Page is set as the Home Page
- In the course navigation menu, click on “Home”. If the new Home Page displays when you click “Home,” proceed to step 5.
- If the new Home Page does not display, look for an option in the right-hand sidebar menu titled “Choose Home Page.”
- Select “Pages Front Page” and click “Save.”
- Refresh your Home page to ensure the correct Home Page is displayed.
Step 5: Edit your new Home page
Now that your Home Page is set, click on the “Edit” button at the top right corner to open the rich text editor and customize the text and content of your course Home Page.
Remember to click “Save” at the bottom right before leaving the page.
Step 6: Remove the old page and modules
Once your new Home Page is customized, remember to delete the old template pages, files, and modules.
Outdated or duplicate files can negatively impact your Ally Accessibility score.
- First, in the “Modules” area, delete the old template modules, including instructor and student resource modules.
- Then, navigate to pages and delete the pages that were linked to the old modules.
- Finally, open the files area, look for the old template assets folder, and delete it.
Conclusion
Updating your Canvas Home page each semester ensures students have quick access to current information and resources and helps manage your Ally Accessibility Report Score. By setting the new template homepage as your Front Page, customizing it to match your course, and removing outdated content, you maintain a clear, professional, and accessible learning environment for your students.
